Maintenance Care
Successful periodontal therapy, with regular periodic maintenance care, can sustain periodontal health and reduce tooth loss. Following active periodontal therapy, an interval is established for periodic ongoing care, which continues for the life of the dentition including implant replacements. Active periodontal therapies consist of non-surgical and/or surgical services. Supportive periodontal treatment following active therapy is not synonymous with prophylaxis. Regular maintenance visits, at both your general dentist's office and our office, are necessary to prevent reoccurrence of your periodontal condition; there may be restorative needs (fillings, crowns and bridges) which your general dentist must complete as an integral part of your treatment. An interval of three months between appointments appears to be an effective treatment schedule, but this can vary depending upon the clinical assessment of the patient by the periodontist. When new or recurring periodontal disease appears, additional diagnostic and treatment procedures must be considered. The successful long-term control of periodontal disease depends upon active maintenance care through periodontal maintenance procedures.
