Benefits of Massage
Therapeutic Massage treats your whole body and mind. Many of today's health problems can benefit from therapeutic massage, because the manipulation of soft tissues affects so many of our bodily systems. The benefits of massage are extensive. Massage therapy treatments will have a therapeutic affect and improve health by acting directly on the cardiovascular system:
- Massage aids in improving blood circulation and lowering blood pressure due to the fact that it helps dilate blood vessels.
- Massage mechanically assists venous blood flow back to the heart. This increase of blood flow is much like that of exercise. It has been documented that during a massage, local circulation increases up to three times more than circulation at rest.
- Blood pressure is decreased by therapeutic massage; both diastolic and systolic readings decrease and the effect lasts approximately 40 minutes after a massage session.
- Massage stimulates the release of chemicals in the bloodstream that cause the blood vessels to stay dilated longer than normal, causing the muscles to receive more oxygen, which decreases the chance of injury to the muscles. Massage also replenishes nutritive materials. Along with oxygen, nutrients are transported to the cells and tissues of the body more efficiently.
- Massage promotes rapid removal of metabolic waste products.
- Massage increases the body's red blood count.
- Massage increases white blood cell count. An increase in white blood count enables the body to more effectively protect itself against disease.
- Massage improves skin condition. As superficial blood vessels dilate and circulation increases, added nutrients are brought to the skin improving its condition, texture, and tone. Clinical observations have determined that massage also improves the appearance of the skin (i.e. color and texture).
- Massage reduces stress and anxiety as well as promotes relaxation. In turn, relaxation has a diminishing effect on pain.
- Massage increases delta wave activity in the brain promoting better sleep and relaxation.
- Massage promotes dopamine levels, causing a decrease in stress levels and REDUCED DEPRESSION.
- Massage increases serotonin levels, which are linked to a reduction in stress, depression and pain.
- Massage reduces cortisol levels. Elevated levels of cortisol not only heighten stress but also inhibit immune function.
- Massage reduces levels of epinephrine, which is another "stress" hormone.
- Massage reduces feeling of depression by stimulating the body's natural release of ENDORPHINS, enkephalins, and other pain-reducing chemicals.
- Massage reduces the use of analgesic medicines. Pain reduction of massage reduces the need for excessive use of pain medication.
